DeSci: Applying blockchain science to… science!

Your best painkiller will be developed thanks to blockchain.

Hello, it’s Daniel!

Everyone who graduated from college or university understands that science is tightly tied with bureaucratic procedures, grades, exams, tests, admissions, commissions, and so on, so the inventions or innovations just drown in all that glittering tinsel.

Our always-hurrying time requires scientists to check their hypotheses faster, be more open to the public, and get independence from the old-fashioned grant system of financing if they want to stay competitive.

And DeSci offers an alternative view of traditional science. And here’s what you have to know about it.

How DeSci changes the traditional science

  • Fairer funding
DeSci relies on DeFi to bypass bureaucratic grant systems, enabling borderless crowdfunding. Scientists get funds directly from the community that is interested in the research results.

  • Open access
Using NFTs and DAOs, DeSci ensures transparency in data ownership, provenance, and sharing, fostering collaboration and reducing censorship. Thus, DeSci's digital space gives the needed transparency to contribute, yet there is no chance of forgery or theft of ideas.

  • Democratization of knowledge
DeSci platforms like ResearchHub ($RSC) offer open publishing alternatives to expensive journals, making scientific knowledge more accessible to researchers and the public—no year-long waiting for a publication.

  • Incentivizing research
DeSci platforms like Molecule provide researchers with tokenized rewards for their contributions, accelerating progress and attracting top talent.

Here are a few projects inspiring me today (plus cases)

  • Molecule DAO: Funds and tokenizes biopharmaceutical intellectual property.

Molecule DAO successfully crowdfunded the development of a new antibiotic called "Publica." This project bypassed traditional funding channels and raised over $4 million from its crypto community. Publica is currently undergoing preclinical trials, demonstrating the potential of DeSci to accelerate drug discovery.

  • GenomesDAO ($GENE, $GNOME): Promotes genetic data ownership and secure storage.

  • BioDAOs (e.g., VitaDAO, AthenaDAO): Decentralized communities focused on specific scientific areas like longevity and women's health.

VitaDAO raised funds through its $VITA token to support research on potential rejuvenation strategies. This demonstrates DeSci's ability to direct resources towards previously underfunded research areas.
